August is Vision and Learning Month

As kids head back to school it’s time to prepare them for academic success. What better place to start than making sure your child has a comprehensive vision examination.

According to the American Optometric Association up to 80% of a child’s learning in school is through their vision. Typical vision screenings can miss many vision problems that can impact learning. This is because there is more to vision than having 20/20 eyesight.

Many visual skills, including eye tracking, eye focusing, and eye coordination play an important role in a child’s ability to learn. Deficits in these visual skills can lead to Learning-Related Vision Problems. Symptoms of deficient vision skills include losing place when reading and/or re-reading lines, poor reading comprehension, words going in and out of focus, difficulties copying from the board, and headaches.
